Malaysia Day 2026 falls on Wednesday, September 16. Because it doesn’t connect directly to a weekend, it helps to know in advance what’s open, what’s happening, and how to plan your day. This guide covers everything from the history of the holiday to a sample itinerary for September 16.

What Is Malaysia Day (September 16)? How Is It Different From Merdeka Day?

Malaysia Day marks the formation of the Federation of Malaysia under the 1963 Malaysia Agreement. On this date, Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore came together to form the Federation (Singapore later left the Federation in 1965). It only became a nationwide public holiday in 2010.

Merdeka Day, on the other hand, falls on August 31 and marks Malaya’s independence, an event that took place six years earlier in 1957. In East Malaysia, many people consider the formation of the Federation to be the true founding of the nation, making September 16 the more meaningful date for Sabahans and Sarawakians.
